How to become a more Mindful and Sustainable Shopper
Everywhere you look there is something being sold to you. We live in a world that constantly tells you “BUY! BUY! BUY!”. Whether you’re a retail therapy junkie or getting sucked into the next TikTok fashion trend it can be easy to get wrapped up in all of the new and shiny things out there.
It should be no secret that overconsumption is a major player when it comes to negative environmental impacts on our planet. The fashion industry is responsible for 2-8 % of global carbon emissions. (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). So how do we reduce OUR impact as consumers?
Questions to ask yourself before making a purchase:
1: Do I already own something that serves this purpose?
I know you think you need that Stanley cup but when you really think about it… is it worth it? Do you maybe already own something that could serve the same purpose?
2: Will I still want this 2 months from now?
Trends are fun but fleeting, if you didn’t buy it today would you still want it 2 months from now? Will you even remember it 2 months from now?
3: Who am I supporting if I buy this?
Obviously there are times you do need to buy something but WHO you buy it from can have a huge impact. Can I buy this from a small local business to support my local economy? What are their sustainability practices?
4:Can I fix the one I already have?
It can be heartbreaking when you favorite pair of shoes are on their last leg but you’d be surprised what you can repair with some simple items and a DIY tutorial!
5: Could I buy this secondhand or borrow it?
I get it, you have an event coming up and you don’t have anything to wear! But hear me out, instead of buying something new you will only wear once consider searching your local thrift stores or reaching out to friends and family to borrow if you can.
